Growers search "megabin" constantly, then find every supplier means something slightly different by it. Here is the honest version: "megabin" is a genericised trade name for the large end of the bulk-bin range, not a size standard, and the number that should decide your purchase isn't litres at all, it's how many kilograms of your specific crop the bin holds, safely, without crushing the produce or overloading the deck. What is a "megabin", really?
"Megabin" started as a brand name and drifted into general trade use, the way "esky" or "biro" did. Today growers use it loosely for the large bulk-bin class, roughly the 1 m³ (about 1000 litre) size and up, as distinct from the everyday 500-750 litre produce bin. Because there's no standard behind the word, one supplier's megabin can be a different footprint, depth and rating from another's. That's not a small distinction: it changes how many fit on a truck, whether it racks, and how much crop weight sits on the deck.
So the practical rule is to ignore the label and read three numbers, the external footprint (does it rack and fit your tipper?), the internal volume (how much crop it holds), and the load ratings (can it carry that crop moving and stacked?). Everything useful about a bin lives in those three figures, and "megabin" tells you none of them.
How much does a produce bin actually hold? (weight, not litres)
Volume is what the brochure lists; weight is what the forklift lifts and the rack carries. To convert, use usable volume × the crop's bulk density × a realistic fill factor (produce never fills to the brim). Bulk density is the weight of a cubic metre of loose crop, and it varies enough between crops to change your bin choice. Potatoes run around 0.65 t/m³, carrots a little under that, and onions lighter again near 0.55 t/m³. Two things fall out of this table immediately. First, a "1000 litre" bin is not "1000 kg of produce", for most vegetables it's around half that, so sizing a forklift or a rack off the litre figure will mislead you. Second, the gap between a 750 L and a 1000 L bin is often only ~150 kg of crop, which may not be worth the extra depth if that depth starts bruising the bottom layer. When a standard 1165 bin beats a megabin
Bigger is not free. There are clear cases where the standard ~1165 × 1165 mm bin at 500-750 L is the better buy than the megabin, and growers who chase raw capacity learn these the hard way:
- Bruise-prone or dense crops. A deep column of produce crushes the fruit at the bottom under its own weight. For soft or high-value lines, a shallower bin protects pack-out quality, and quality is the whole margin.
- Existing racking and tippers. If your rack beams, bin tipper and cool-room aisles are built around the 1165 footprint and a set bin height, a taller megabin can foul the rack or exceed the tipper's cradle. Retrofitting handling gear costs more than the bins.
- Mixed or smaller lots. A megabin only pays off when you routinely fill it. For smaller growers or multi-variety operations, more mid-size bins give you flexibility a few giant bins don't.
- Manual unpacking. If produce is hand-lifted out at the far end, a bin someone has to reach to the bottom of is a workplace-health problem, not a saving.

Vented or solid: does the megabin need to breathe?
For crops that keep respiring after harvest, potatoes, onions, carrots and most vegetables, the megabin should be vented. Living produce generates heat and gives off moisture and ethylene in storage; vented walls and a vented floor let that heat and gas escape and let cool air move up through the stack, which is what actually extends storage life. Pack the same crop into a solid, sealed bin and you trap heat and humidity against it and accelerate spoilage. Solid bins have their place, for wet product, contained goods or non-food bulk, but for stored fresh produce, venting is a storage-life decision, not a nice-to-have.

Load ratings: can the bin carry what you filled it with?
Every bin carries three load numbers and they are not interchangeable. Static is what it holds sitting still or at the base of a stack. Dynamic is what it holds moving on forklift tines, this is the one your fill weight must not exceed in handling. Racking is what it holds bridging two beams with nothing under the middle, usually the lowest of the three, and the figure that keeps a loaded rack standing. A worked check: a 750 L vented bin rated 1,000 kg dynamic and 500 kg racking, filled with ~470 kg of potatoes, is comfortable on the forklift (470 < 1,000) but is close to its racking ceiling (470 vs 500), so it can be moved freely but should only be racked at ground-and-one-up, or de-rated. Ignore that distinction and you can overload a rack that looked fine on the "1,000 kg" headline.
